A 21-year-old Pace University student was fatally shot during a botched holdup at his upscale apartment in Manhattan's financial district.

The victim, identified as Max Moreno, of Matawan, N.J., was shot once in the head shortly after midnight Wednesday by one of two intruders who tried to rob him at gunpoint at the Gold Street building.

"Pace University is shocked and deeply saddened by news of the death of Max Moreno," said University President Stephen J. Friedman in a statement. "We extend our community’s deepest sympathies to his family members and friends."

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said investigators believe Moreno had sold marijuana to a couple moments before the shooting.

No arrests have been made.
