Woman Raped on Hiking Path in Long Island Park: Police

The alleged rapist is described as around 5 foot 9, with a thin build and short hair with braids on the side

Authorities are looking for a man wanted for allegedly raping a woman in a Long Island park.

The 60-year-old victim was walking on a hiking path in Valley Stream Park at around 11:10 a.m. Sunday when she was sexually assaulted, New York State Park Police said.

Visitors to the park Monday were detoured around crime scene tape and questioned by State Police.

"It takes away from your sense of security for those of us here every day and for those who just want to use the park, " said Maryellen Lawless of Malverne, who has ridden her bike down the same hiking path dozens of times.

Others said they've never felt unsafe and won't be deterred by an isolated incident.

"It's a terrible thing, but doesn't change my feelings about this park because I know it can happen anywhere," said Michelle Wilson of Rosedale.

State Park Police have asked anyone with information to call 631-321-3700.
