Police officers knocking on a burglary suspect’s door knew they were at the right place when a dog the man allegedly stole trotted out as soon as it opened.
Officers Nicholas Occhipinti and Anthony Brucato were investigating a string of burglaries in Gravesend, Brooklyn on Thursday when they realized the suspect was someone they’d arrested before, the NYPD said.
The pair went to the man’s home and knocked on his door, police said. When the man opened the door, a Golden Retriever that had been stolen during one of the burglaries bounded out and greeted the officers.
The officers also spotted some of the items that had been stolen inside the man’s home, the NYPD said.
The man, identified by police as Cory Gaudio, 23, of Gravesend, was arrested at the scene, police said.
The Golden Retriever, whose name is Scooby, was reunited with its owner, according to police.
After Gaudio was arrested, officers obtained a warrant to search his home. On Friday, police found a machete, a sword, an expandable baton, a knuckle knife, electronics, jewelry, a police scanner, credit and debit cards, IDs, narcotics pills and a dog leash embroidered with the name “Scooby” inside his home, the NYPD said.
Police believe some of the items were stolen.
Gaudio has been charged with two counts of attempted burglary, two counts of burglary, three counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance, two counts of criminal possession of a weapon, two counts of criminal possession of stolen property, criminal use of drug paraphernalia, unlawful possession of radio devices and violation of local laws, police said.
