Authorities on Saturday seized a Capuchin monkey that was illegally kept in a Long Island home.
Agents from the state Department of Environmental Conservation and the Suffolk County SPCA removed the monkey from a home in Brentwood after receiving a complaint about the primate on Friday, said SPCA Chief Roy Gross.
A permit is required for ownership of primates, according to the DEC.
The monkey's owner, who hasn't been identified by authorities, was charged with failing to have a permit, Gross said.
"These primates can transmit infectious diseases and can inflict serious injury," he said.
The monkey was being taken to a licensed facility.
