A state narcotics officer has been arrested in the shooting of two people on a busy Upper West Side street lined with restaurants and bars, police said Saturday.
The officer, an employee with the New York State Bureau of Narcotics, was drunk at the time of his arrest on charges of assault, reckless endangerment and resisting arrest, according to the NYPD. It was not immediately clear if he had a lawyer.
Police said the officer apparently did not know the couple, a man and a woman who were shot outside a bar near the intersection of West 81st Street and Amsterdam Avenue, amid the Friday evening crowds.
The 31-year-old woman was shot in the ankle and her 42-year-old companion was hit in the calf, police said. They were taken to St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital and were expected to recover.
Witnesses said a large number of plainclothes officers immediately swooped in. One witness who shot video in the immediate aftermath of the shooting said a man was taken into custody on the scene.
Police said they were investigating whether the shooting was accidental.
