J.Crew’s Colorful Spring Collection Was Inspired By a Trip to Greece

Womenswear designer Marissa Webb took a trip to Greece in the middle of winter and returned with a new appreciation for "clean, vibrant, crisp color."

While J.Crew has held presentations in the past, this was the first season that the brand staged a collection during the official Fashion Week calendar, and at Lincoln Center, to boot.

The presentation was packed with fashion insiders and retail heavyweights alike, with several noteworthy celebrity apperances: Solange Knowles appeared toward the end of the presentation wearing a Prabal Gurung for J.Crew top and J.Crew pants (flanked here by Jenna Lyons and Marissa Webb). Shortly thereafter, her sister Beyonce made a flashbulb-heavy entrance.

Says Webb, the spring season "was really about travel, and really wanting that warmth and that sunshine."

While color has always been a seminal part of J.Crew's lexicon, this season's palette is especially saturated. "It really was about clean -- not dusty -- clean, vibrant, crisp color," says Webb. "How the colors played off the dry, dry landscape of Greece -- with that little pink or little yellow bouncing off the sand."

In typical J.Crew fashion, the collection pairs high and low with panache: Here, a denim button-down is paired with a striped sequin skirt.

In a similar fashion, a crisp striped coat is paired with some rough-and-tumble jean shorts.

Some hints at a nautical theme could be tied back to Webb's little sail boat in the sea around Greece. "The inspiration was the ocean, and travel, and a little bit of Francoise Hardy," says Webb.

Also pervasive in the collection is J.Crew's signature way of mixing prints. Those looking to experiment could take a few pointers from this bold combination of a paisley wallpaper-like pattern, paired with stripes and leopard print.

The menswear collection, designed by Frank Muytjens, was shown in the same collection space and featured similar pops of clean color with a few nautical references. Color even turned up in more unconventional places, like a pale yellow button-down paired with a slim-cut suit.
