The 248th New York City St. Patrick's Day Parade is on Tuesday, March 17, 2009.

The parade was broadcast on Channel 4 New York and affiliate NBC stations around the country from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. EST.

The Grand Marshal of the 248th parade will be Michael J. Gibbons, President Emeritus of the Ireland-U.S. Council, the former executive vice president and general manager of Estée Lauder and a member of the County Mayo Society of New York.

The parade is the world’s oldest and largest civic parade and celebrates the faith of Ireland, Irish heritage and culture. It honors Saint Patrick, the patron Saint of the Archdiocese of New York and Ireland. The Parade marched for the first time on March 17, 1762 - 14 years before the Declaration of Independence.
