Police have arrested a man accused of fleeing to India after raping a 14-year-old girl while she was walking to school more than three years ago.
The girl was allegedly assaulted as she walked past the suspect's home in Elmont March 11, 2009, according to the Nassau County Police Department.
After failing to coax her inside, the attacker forced the girl into the home and raped her in a bedroom, prosecutors say. He allegedly drove her to school after the attack.
Police worked with authorities in India to arrest and extradite Amit Singh, who left the United States on March 16, 2009, one day before the girl identified him in a photo lineup as her attacker.
An international warrant was issued for the man, prosecutors said, and he was arrested by Indian authorities as he tried to travel from New Delhi to Thailand in 2011.
Singh, 32, was transported back to Nassau County Friday and charged with first-degree rape, second-degree rape, first-degree sexual abuse, third-degree sexual abuse, endangering the welfare of a child and violation of probation.
It wasn't immediately clear if he had an attorney.
