Approximately 3,000 Con Edison customers on Staten Island lost power Saturday night because of two separate outages, utility officials said.
Homes and businesses in the Travis neighborhood were without power because of a downed wire.
More than 2,000 customers in the Castletown Corners area lost power because of a blow feeder, officials said.
Con Edison also is asking customers in parts of Harlem and East Harlem to conserve energy while crews repair equipment in those areas.
Con Edison said it reduced voltage in those neighborhoods by eight percent to protect equipment.
More than 37,000 customers are affected by the repair work.
Con Edison has asked customers in these areas not to use energy-intensive appliances such as washers, dryers, microwaves and, if not needed for health or medical reasons, air conditioners, until the equipment problems are resolved.
