We heard about New York-based designer Ernest Alexander when we stumbled across his sturdy, leather-trimmed briefcases. Now, dapper gents (and gals looking for either a hip Father's Day shopping destination or borrowed-from-the-boys essentials for themselves) can paw through the goods in person at the new 96 Thompson Street flagship store.

"I always dreamed of having my own retail location," says Ernest, who built the shop's rugged fixtures himself. "It was a rainy Tuesday afternoon, and we were traipsing around Soho and came across this wonderful empty space with a sign in the window. I think it was fated in the stars."

Every piece in the store is made entirely in New York City, including these stylish summer ties ($65-$72) fashioned from lightweight silks and bold cotton patterns.

"The vibe we were going for was gentlemanly, and maybe a little bit Old World but not overly stuffy," explains Ernest. Indeed, while the boutique has a man's-man appeal, the colorful gear gives it a certain lightness. Here, a copper rack stuffed with Japanese woven cotton button-downs ($95) in spring-ready shades.

A closer look at one of Ernest Alexander's slim-fitting button-downs. We were extra keen on this summery, violet and blue plaid ($135).

Rugged denim is a special highlight of the new shop. These raw, untreated jeans are designed to break in to the wearer's body, and were woven on the original Levi's looms ($195).
"It has been great for us to actuallly meet our customers face to face," says Ernest. "Running an online business, you don't get to put faces with names, and you learn from your customers. For example, a lot of people have asked if we do custom shirting, which is something we'd be interested in exploring in the future."

Of course, the brand's rough 'n' tumble luggage and leather goods are in abundant supply. This handsome Fuller rucksack is executed in a water-resistant canvas and finished with leather straps and buckles ($245).

Asked about his favorite spring pieces, Ernest reaches for the classic waxed canvas Watson brief, which comes in a cool, black and blue plaid edition for summertime ($295).

Footwear fans will drool over Alexander's boot collaboration with E.Vogel, who fashions these classic lace-ups in a New York City townhouse.
