Twitter Cobra Sssspeaks, Day After Zoo Finds Snake

The restless Bronx Zoo cobra has broken her ssssilence.

A day after the rare Egyptian snake was found and returned to her quarters following a week on the lam, the mystery Twitter account that imagines her voice was back to her old ways, tweeting a cake recipe that includes a saw.

"Bring it by the zoo," @BronxZoosCobra tweeted to more than 220,000 followers Friday.

Of course, unless this is one seriously savvy reptile, the tweets are coming from a human merely posing as the celebrity snake.

"A lot of comedians are saying to themselves, 'I wish I had thought of doing that,' " said Craig Baldo, a comedian who tweets as @craigbaldo. "Thinking that there's this deadly venomous snake tweeting -- I think it's funny. A deadly, slimy slithery snake being funny."

The 24-inch cobra that disappeared in the Bronx Zoo Reptile House was found Thursday, coiled up in a dark corner. Animal handlers snagged her gently with special tongs.

Zoo officials always speculated she'd turn up nearby, but the mere possibility of a snake "on the loose" led to the social network phenomenon, as well as more buzz -- or perhaps, ssssizzle -- for the Bronx Zoo than anytime in recent memory.

The Reptile House remains closed until at least next week. Meanwhile, the zoo is asking New Yorkers to think of names for the world's most famous cobra.

A few suggestions on NBC New York's Facebook page now: Whodini, SSSSSally and Missssy.
