Newark Bodega Owner Shot, Killed Moments After Opening Store: Police, Family

A Newark store owner was shot and killed while opening the family bodega Tuesday morning, police say.

Felix Rosario, 55, was opening the Dalbert Grocery store on Runyon Street with his adult son just after 9 a.m. when two men walked in, looked around and then left, relatives told NBC 4 New York. They returned a few minutes later, shot Rosario and ran.

A woman who identified herself as Rosario's daughter-in-law told NBC 4 in Spanish that it wasn't a robbery and that he was targeted. Police say they don't know what the motive is.

Family member Juaquin Francisco said Rosario was a hard worker and decent man who had been running a separate business, and only came to the current store a few months ago to help out. Neighbors said Rosario would allow customers to have food if they were hungry and couldn't pay.

"He look out for the neighbrhood, he's all right," said James Williams. "'If you don't have it, you can get it.' He was just all-around good guy."
