Police are looking for three men who drilled through the floor of a Manhattan bank over the weekend and tried to cut into ATMs inside, then escaped through an underground tunnel when they were unsuccessful.
The men were able to get into the basement of a nearby building and drill into the ceiling to get into the CitiBank on Park Avenue South in Gramercy at about 2:30 a.m. Saturday, the NYPD said.
The suspects tried to cut into ATMs inside the bank, but couldn't get in. They left the bank without any cash, authorities said.
"It seems like they were amateurs because they went through a bunch of wood, then they hit brick," said Dr. Emil Chynn, whose office shares a basement with the CitiBank ATM center. "They weren't able to get through the brick that well and they gave up."
Chynn said the building superintendent told him an alarm alerted police, who showed up but were unable to find the thieves because they found another way out.
"Apparently the perps were in the basement, and they went through a tunnel and came out about a block away," he said.
Police released photos of the three suspects.
