Pop Ups: Flip-Flop Ya Don't Stop With Gap and Havaianas

It's Fashion Week all over again, or so it felt like last night at the preview party for the GAP x Havaianas Urban Beach Pop-Up shop, which opened today next to their Fifth Ave flagship. Like last September's fashion week, air kisses flew and cocktails clinked as a line slowly formed to design your own pair of the Brazilian flip-flops.

Set into the small boutique space where previously GAP held their Colette and Project (Red) pop-ups, the Havaianas shop is a rainbow of beachwear and rubber thongs. In addition to the usual $18 flip flops from Havaianas, the shop also stocks the thicker, more ergonomic $32 flops and the $30 pairs with ankle strap. Of course we advise to make a bee-line straight for the customization table, and here's how to do it:

1: Hit the shop on Saturday and Sunday from today through June 13 to fully customize a pair from the thong to the bedazzlement. On weekdays, you will only be able to purchase a pair and opt for the bedazzling for an extra $2.
2: If you make it on a weekend, head to the customization bar and get inspiration from what we're calling the "Wall o' Flops."
3: Tell them your size (tip: Havaianas usually run a tad bit large) and your choices for footbed and thong colors.
4: While they're assembling them in front of you, decide if you'd like to have your initials or other decorations pierced onto the thong.
5: Pay, duh. It's $18 for the basic flip-flops and another $2 to create your own.

This pop-up with GAP is also Havaianas' "first standalone endeavor in the U.S.;" a surprise, considering we'd totally expect something like this to hit LA first. Although it may be a stretch to spend some time waiting in a line on Fifth Avenue on a Saturday, we say it's worth it to get your hands (or feet, rather) on these favorite flip-flops, whose Brazilian origins and top secret rubber recipe just add to the intrigue.
