2 Hurt in Hamptons House Explosion: Police

Two workers were hurt in an explosion that leveled a home in the Hamptons community of Water Mill Wednesday afternoon, authorities say.

Southampton Fire Chief Brenner said "it was total devastation and destruction" when firefighters pulled up to the home on Old Country Road and Montauk Highway.

"There's nothing left," he said.

The blast was so powerful, one witness said, that it sent glass flying 60 feet into the air.

Police say they're looking into whether it was a gas explosion that took down the home, which was in the process of being demolished. A National Grid spokeswoman said two workers happened to be in the area at the time, and when they heard the explosion, rushed to the scene and turned off the gas fueling the fire.

The two workers inside the home were airlifted to Stony Brook Hospital, according to Southampton police. They suffered burns to the face, but their conditions weren't immediately clear.

Firefighters didn't find anyone else inside the home. No other homes in the area were seriously damaged.

Southampton police said the four-bedroom home was in the process of being demolished. It was sold in December 2014 for just under $1.1 million, according to public records.
