City Worker Fatally Injured at Brooklyn Housing Project

A 31-year-old maintenance worker was killed Saturday while working at a public housing complex in Brooklyn, authorities said.

Toni Jackson, an employee of the New York City Housing Authority, was fatally injured while performing her job at the Coney Island Houses, said NYCHA Chairwoman Shola Olatoye.

"We'd like to extend our condolences and prayers to her family and co-workers during this difficult time," she said. "Our employees are the heart of NYCHA and this is a very sad day for all of us."

A statement from the authority did not provide any details about the accident.

Jakwon Rivers, a shop steward with Jackson's union, Teamsters Local 237, said a faulty hoist fell on her.

Rivers is demanding an investigation into safety practices at the authority.

He said Jackson was the mother of two children.
