NYC Neighbors Found Dead 2 Days Apart in Gruesome Mystery

What to Know

  • Basil Gray, 54, was found dead inside the Bushwick Houses in Brooklyn on Sunday
  • Gray lived in the apartment next to the one where 62-year-old Ana Devalle was found shot dead on Friday
  • Gray appeared to have been dead for more than a day, the NYPD said

A man was found dead with several gunshot wounds to his torso two days after his 62-year-old neighbor was found dead with her head shot and hands bound, police said.

Basil Gray, 54, was found dead inside the Bushwick Houses in Brooklyn around 4:40 p.m. Sunday, police and sources close to the investigation said.

Family members who hadn't heard from Gray since Thursday evening found him lying the floor unconscious when they came to check on him, NYPD Deputy Chief Michael Kemper said at a press conference at the scene Sunday evening.

Gray was pronounced dead at the scene, but may not have died that day, Kemper said.

The victim lived in the apartment next to the one where 62-year-old Ana Devalle lived and was found dead on Friday

"There's a strong possibility that he died on the same date and [at the] same approximate time as his neighbor," Kemper said.

Police are still trying to determine if there was any relationship between Gray and Devalle besides their proximity as neighbors.

A "small amount" of money was missing from Devalle's apartment on Friday, but investigators hadn't yet determined if robbery was a motive, Kemper said.

There was no forced entry into either apartment, he added.

Police are now going door-to-door to check in on every resident in the building, sources said.

An investigation is ongoing.
