1 Dead, 1 Critically Hurt in Fire Above Queens Church: Officials

A fire broke out at a building with a storefront church in Queens on Sunday, killing one man and critically injuring another, officials said.

David Hawkins, 64, died at Jamaica Hospital, the NYPD said. The second victim, an 84-year-old man, remained in critical condition.

The three-story building in Jamaica has two floors of apartments above the Next Generation of Victory Temple.

Hawkings lived in one of the apartments above the church, police said.

A woman who was inside the church told NBC 4 New York that she smelled smoke and then ran outside to knock on doors and alert the residents.

The FDNY said the fire broke out shortly after 3 p.m. in the building on 150th Street, just a few blocks from York College.

The church broadcast a sermon on Facebook live about an hour before the fire started.
