A 13-year-old boy who took a BB gun and a knife to a Coney Island school has been detained by police, law enforcement sources say.
Rachel Carson High School for Coastal Studies was placed on lockdown after a student at the school told the principal he or she saw another student with a gun, according to sources and an official.
The principal called 911 and police responded and searched the school on West Avenue. Video from Chopper 4 shows a heavy police presence outside the school around 11:30 a.m.
Police found a BB gun and a knife on the boy and he was detained, sources said.
“Safety is our top priority and the NYPD swiftly and safely recovered the BB gun,” said Miranda Barbot, a spokeswoman for the Department of Education, in a statement.
Barbot said student and staff are safe and that the temporary lockdown has since been lifted.
Local
The lockdown comes a day after Fort Hamilton High School in Bay Ridge was placed on lockdown because a student reported seeing someone in a stairwell with a gun. Officers searched the school floor by floor, but didn't find any gunman. Police later said there was no active shooter threat.
