Police say burglars have slammed trucks into three businesses in Newark over the last week in attempts to steal money from ATMs inside.
The two most recent smash-grab attempts were Friday morning, at the Any Garment Cleaners in McCarter Plaza and a nearby Applebee's, police say. The burglaries come about a week after someone stole cash from a convenience store in the city and made off with an ATM.
Carrie Renzi, the owner of Any Garment Cleaners, told NBC 4 New York she got a call from her alarm company after the truck rammed into the front of her business at about 3 a.m. Friday.
She said that when she looked at feeds from her store’s surveillance cameras, she saw burglars trying to grab the ATM.
"We saw a pickup truck back up into the window and the door," she said. "They were ramming to try to get the ATM. It's damaged, but they didn't get anything."
Police say that thieves smashed into the front door of an Applebee's 2 miles away a few hours later. The front of the building appears to be heavily damaged and the ATM is ripped open. It's unclear if anything was taken.
