Broken Hydrant Sends Geyser Rushing Into Upper East Side Street

Water from a broken hydrant spewed into the air in the Upper East Side Wednesday afternoon, forcing officials to shut down a flooded intersection.

Chopper 4 footage from East 74th Street and Lexington Avenue showed a small geyser shooting form the sidewalk and into the intersection. Several crews were working to stop the rush of water.

By 1:30 p.m., the water had subsided to a trickle, but it's still unclear what caused the leak.

The MTA says its crews use the hydrant to mix concrete for a nearby project.

At least one water customer said his water was shut off for about an hour. Authorities said there was no lasting impact or damage to area residences or businesses.
