Burglar Gets into Upper East Side Apartments Using Fire Escape: NYPD

A burglar used fire escapes to get into apartments on the Upper East Side and steal thousands of dollars worth of electronics, jewelry, clothing and prescription medication, police say.

Police have released surveillance video of the suspect, who got into two different buildings in under two hours Monday morning, both on East 81st Street between East End and York avenues.

The man got into the first apartment through a back fire escape, and once inside, took electronics, jewelry, clothing and personal documents worth a total of about $1,750.

He then got into an apartment in an adjoining building through the back fire escape, and took two laptop computers and prescription medication worth a total of $2,500.

The suspect was carrying a green duffel bag and a black backpack, video shows.

Neighbor Daniella Granda said the area is "so quiet and residential, this caught me by surprise."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 800-577-TIPS.
