Pregnant Woman Trying to Help Friend Move Out of Apartment Shot in the Face, Stomach Inside Bronx Public Housing Complex: NYPD

A 20-year-old pregnant woman was shot in the face and stomach early Wednesday in a Bronx public housing complex as she tried to help her friend move out of an apartment, officials said.

The woman, who is believed to be 6 to 7 weeks pregnant, was shot in an apartment on the 14th floor of the Gouverneur Morris Houses at East 170th Street and Third Avenue in Claremont at about 3:45 a.m., according to the FDNY.

Authorities say she was helping her 23-year-old friend move out of an apartment in the complex when the friend got into an argument with her mother. The friend's stepfather then came out of the apartment with a gun and started firing randomly, striking the pregnant woman twice, authorities say.

She was taken to Lincoln Hospital in serious condition; her condition was later upgraded to stable and her unborn baby was also listed in stable condition.

The friend's stepfather was taken into police custody.

Sergio Valle, a man who lives in the building, said he heard four shots go off around the time of the shooting. He said that after the shooting he saw police swarming the building after the shooting.

"I heard 'bang, bang, bang, bang!'" he said.
