A man was shot by police in New Jersey early Monday, authorities say.
Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli says that Matthew Chaseman, of Maywood, was shot by two police officers after some sort of altercation on Route 17 in Rochelle Park at about 3:30 a.m.
Molinelli says that Chaseman, 46, was shot near his car, which crashed before police arrived. A gun or pellet gun was found in the vehicle.
The prosecutor says Chaseman was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center with wounds to his lower extremities. There is no word on his condition.
Authorities initially reported that a woman had been shot.
The police officers were not injured.
The Bergen County prosecutor's office is investigating.
