Cops Speak Out on Mental Health Stigma, Need for Care

Cops Speak Out on Mental Health Stigma, Need for Care

Amid rising concerns about police officer suicides, an unprecedented survey by the News 4 New York I-Team has found there’s a startling need for mental health services that’s not being met.

About the Crisis

The NYPD is facing an escalating crisis, with nine officers dying by suicide so far in 2019, seven of them since the start of June. Two took their lives in just a two-day span. The NYPD has said it typically averages four to five officer suicides a year.

The series of recent tragedies has prompted all levels of police leadership to speak out on the need for cops to look after their mental health -- and that of their colleagues.

'The Debrief' Podcast

Reporter Pei-Sze Cheng tells David Ushery how stigma within the NYPD, and fear of repercussions, is stopping cops with mental health problems from coming forward -- even as the force faces a suicide crisis. Listen to it here.

Two New York police officers are found dead by suicide in 24 hours in June. In an extra edition of The Debrief, David Ushery sits down with NYPD Commissioner James P. O’Neill as his organization reacts to the tragic news. Listen to it here.
