Long Beach Medical Center was financially troubled even before the storm, and state officials have been pushing it to merge with another facility rather than reopen.
Now another medical center, South Nassau Communities Hospital, says it plans to open a freestanding emergency room of its own in Long Beach.
A South Nassau Communities Hospital spokesman tells Newsday that the new ER could happen as soon as late summer.
The hospital is also planning to open an urgent-care facility in Long Beach in late spring.
Long Beach Medical Center Chief Executive Douglas Melzer says he's pleased that South Nassau is interested in restoring health services lost when his hospital shut down.
