Comptroller Says City Water Customers “Being Gouged”

Excessive water bills are drowning some New Yorkers already hurting from rising MTA fares and the overall state of the economy, Comptroller Bill Thompson said.

The city's Water Board meets this week to consider a likely 14-percent increase in rates.

"Rate payers are being gouged," Thompson told the New York Post.

In this fiscal year, the city will set aside $123 million in excess water revenue.

"When the city says they're not responsible for rate increases, that's a charade," Thompson told the Post. "The city is directly responsible."
