Perpetual ‘Dad' Wainwright Plays Free Family Affair

Loudon Wainwright III plays a free outdoor concert in Madison Square Park tonight, kicking off the Oval Lawn Series -- he'll be joined by his sister Sloan and his daughter Lucy Wainwright Roche. If past is prologue, the performers will likely spend most of the show singing about each other (and what Dad done wrong).

Loudon has toured continuously playing his humor-inflected and bittersweet brand of folk music on the road for three decades, but he might be better known to many younger fans as the perpetual dad. He played Dads in "Freaks and Geeks," Tim Burton's "Big Fish" and the Kirsten Dunst-Orlando Bloom vehicle "Eizabethtown," and others.

The Wainwright family is a well-known sprawl of talent, with Rufus (son of Loudon and Kate McGarrigle) enjoying the most commercial success. But sister Martha is right at his heels. In fact, if you could manage collect the entire singing and strumming Wainwright clan, with the McGarrigle and Roche wings, there would probably not be room for anyone not related by blood or marriage on the Oval Lawn in Madison Square Park tonight. Hell, forget about Madison Square Park -- they could probably fill up Madison Square Garden.
