6/23: Phil Collins’ '60s Dance Party, Food Film Fest…

Live Nation

Phil Collins (pictured here as a teen) returns to his soul-music roots.

IN THE AIR TONIGHT: Phil Collins is fairly famous at this point for copping to not being cool, but to hear his Roseland Ballroom gig described, we might have to disagree with him. In the lead-up to his fall release Going Back—a collection of rebooted soul classics that shaped him musically—his show is less concert, more ’60s shindig, with a dancefloor, blowout brass section, and none of his original material (fans, take note: this is a covers-only set). Just like a Friday night dance in Memphis circa 1966, except with the dude from Genesis. Sorry, but this does sound pretty cool. 8PM (also 6/24, 25).

SHUCKING JIVE: The Fourth Annual Food Film Festival—a five-day extravaganza of food-themed films accompanied by a smorgasbord of tastings—kicks off today with the Great New York City Shuck ’n Suck at South Street Seaport’s Water Taxi Beach. Come for the shucking contest and short films about the sweet bivalve, stay for the all-you-can-eat oyster chowdown. 7PM.

PROOF POSITIVE: Oysters not your bag? How about booze? At the Indy Spirits Expo, 40+ purveyors of alcoholic delights will congregate to show off their wares and raise awareness about some small-batch but excellent artisanal brands from around the world (like Berkshire Mountain Distillers or Redemption Rye). What this means to you: An evening of sipping spirits and palling around with the gregarious types who make (or import) booze for a living. Not too shabby. Touch NY, 6:30PM.
