A Westport, Conn., man has been charged with defrauding a Fairfield resident of $35,000 by selling what he said was dirt from the original Yankee Stadium.

Mark Hayward is accused of asking the alleged victim to invest in marketing gift items such as a key chain containing dirt from the Bronx, N.Y., ballpark.

The Hour of Norwalk and Connecticut Post report that police say the unidentified man agreed to invest $35,000 for a 20 percent share.

Police say the 52-year-old Hayward said he had more than $1 million he would use to pay the Fairfield resident.

Hayward has been charged with larceny and forgery. He is scheduled to appear in Bridgeport Superior Court on Jan. 23.

A phone number could not be found for Hayward and it's not known if he is represented by a lawyer.
