Strong Winds Topple Trees, Send Debris Flying Across Tri-State; At Least 1 Injured

Strong winds caused damage across the tri-state Monday and Tuesday, as gusts reaching 50 mph or more toppled trees, downed power lines and slung debris, injuring at least one person in New York City.

A wind advisory was still in effect for much of the New York City area Tuesday morning after a wild, windy night.

Flights into LaGuardia Airport were experiencing 60-minute delays Tuesday morning because of windy conditions. And about 350 Con Edison customers were without power across the tri-state.

Strong winds sent wood flying from a construction site Monday evening, hurting one pedestrian in a part of Brooklyn, and knocked down a large tree in another neighborhood hours later, officials say.

A pedestrian was struck and injured by a piece of flying wood near a construction site at Eighth Avenue and 56th Street in Sunset Park at about 6 p.m., according to the FDNY.

The victim was taken to Maimonides Medical Center and listed in serious but stable condition.

At about 8 p.m., a large tree blew over onto power lines near 27th Street and Avenue P in Marine Park, according to the parks department. There was no immediate report of any outages or injuries.

Fire crews had to deal with the whipping winds as they battled a raging fire in Queens early Tuesday morning.

Two houses and three garages caught fire in the Queens blaze, as embers burned in the air. Six firefighters were injured, but everyone in the houses managed to escape unharmed.

Trees were also toppled amid high winds on Long Island Monday night.

A tree struck a house in Massapequa Park and another tree blocked a roadway in Brentwood.

Downed trees also caused damage in Deer Park, where power lines were left ravaged.

A vehicle was crushed by a tree in Yonkers. The tree also took down power lines.

A tree fell onto a car in Selden.

Up in Westchester, more trees landed on cars and across roads, taking power lines with them. One tree alone managed to fall on three parked cars in Mt. Vernon.

A tree fell on top of three parked cars in Mt. Vernon.

And in Yonkers, a tree fell across a road, narrowly missing parked cars.
