High Winds Hammer Tri-State for 2nd Day Ahead of Frigid Night

After a sunny and brisk Easter, the beginning of the workweek was a sloppy and windy one.

Showers that drenched commuters Monday morning were followed by strong winds, which descended on the tri-state area when the rain let up in the afternoon.

A wind advisory was in effect in Ulster, Dutchess, Putnam, Orange, Rockland, Westchester, Fairfield, Passaic, Bergen, Hudson, Essex, and Union counties, as well as the five New York City boroughs from 5 p.m. Monday to 6 p.m. Tuesday.

A wind advisory is issued when sustained winds of 31 to 39 mph or gusts of 46 to 57 mph are expected to occur.

Newark Airport recorded a gust of 58 mph early Monday evening, and more of the same is expected Tuesday, especially in the morning hours.

Strong winds are also being blamed for damage across the tri-state. The gusts hurt at least one person in Brooklyn and toppled trees from Long Island to Westchester, smashing cars and crashing into homes. They also fueled the flames of a fire in Queens.

The heavy winds will continue to blow Tuesday, with gusts reaching up to 50 mph in the morning, according to Storm Team 4. Other than that, it's forecast to be much drier and slightly cooler than it was on Monday as high temperatures reach the low 50s.

Temperatures are expected to plummet into the low 30s and even 20s Tuesday night.

Wednesday might be the nicest day of the week, when temps will be in the upper 50s under sunny skies.

It will be nearly 70 degrees on Thursday, but there’s also a chance that showers and thunderstorms will drench our area later in the day and evening, putting a damper on things.

The spring showers and storms are forecast to continue Friday before a dry, but cooler weekend. Snow flurries are even possible on Saturday night.
