NYPD Officers Fatally Shoot Suspect During Gun Battle

An armed suspect has been shot and killed by a New York City police officer following a gun battle.

The shooting occurred just before 4 p.m. Thursday in the East New York section of Brooklyn.

Police say plainclothes police officers were investigating possible gang violence in the neighborhood when they spotted a man running from a house.

As the officers exited their vehicle to approach him, police say the man, identified as 17-year-old Kadeem Torres of Brooklyn, drew a revolver and fired at them. The officers returned fire and the suspect fled to the rear of a home two blocks away.

One of the officers then followed Torres into an alley, where police say he confronted the suspect and shot him.

Torres was pronounced dead at the scene. The gun was recovered.

Neighbor Mitchell Pendleton had just turned the corner onto Belmont Avenue when he heard gunshots, the bullets flying right across the street from his apartment.

"It must have been 13, 14 shots," he said.

He said he's grateful no one else was hurt despite the shootout near the homes.

"I think they did what the community would want," he said. "Someone else could have gotten hurt, and they didn't. And we appreciate that."
