Cabbie Gets Shot, Crashes Into Tree in Rockland County: Police

An off-duty cab driver crashed through a fence and into a tree after he was shot in Rockland County Monday afternoon, police say.

It's not clear what led to the 23-year-old cab driver getting shot before he crashed into a tree on West Eckerson Road in Spring Valley at around 2:30 p.m Police say they're searching for the shooter.

The cab driver was not on duty at the time, according to co-workers at American Latina Taxi.

He was treated at the scene by EMS, then taken to Nyack Hospital, Ramapo police said. He's since been transferred to Westchester Medical Center.

Neighbors say they heard gunshots and then saw the crash -- then yelling.

"A couple guys in shorts, kept beating on his window to 'get out of the car, get out of the car,'" said Melba Fenwick. "He backed into the other side of the fence, and I ran in."

Fenwick ran in to tell her fiance about the commotion growing outside her driveway.

"By the time I got back it was horrendous, like a mob, and they were still beating on the door, and people were cursing," she said.

Circumstances leading up the shooting remain a mystery, and police were short on details at the scene. No other car was on the scene.
