Hamptons Beach Closed After Shark Sightings

Shark sightings off a Hamptons beach on eastern Long Island have forced authorities to again close a county park to swimming until further notice.

It started on Tuesday afternoon. About four or five 10-foot sharks were seen at Cupsogue Beach County Park, near West Hampton Dunes. Swimmers were ordered out of the water and guards were posted overnight.

Deputy Suffolk County Parks Commissioner Tracey Bellone says the sharks were spotted there again Wednesday. Visitors were being allowed in the park, but not in the water.

Authorities were also investigating the death of a decapitated seal nearby. It was not immediately known if sharks killed the seal.

Bellone said the species of shark was not immediately known.
