Police Rescue Long Island Man From Icy Lake

A 68-year-old man is recovering Saturday after he fell through the ice on a Long Island lake and had to be rescued by police.

The man, whose name was withheld by Nassau County police, cracked through the ice on Caroon Lake in Massapequa while chasing after his dog. The man was submerged up to his chest in the icy water.

A police sergeant responding to a 2 p.m. 911 call extended a ladder across the ice to reach the man and pull him to safety. The "shivering" dog was also recovered, police said.

The man was taken to a hospital, where he was treated for hypothermia.
