Bayonne Burglar Raids Houses, Refrigerators

peckish prowler pilfers from pals, victims say

Police are searching for a Jersey thief who has stolen everything from jewels to an X-Box to a sausage-and-pepper sandwich.

At least four families in Bayonne, NJ have been victims of theft in the past two months, residents told the Jersey Journal. What's more, they believe they know who the peckish prowler is: The families are all acquainted, and have identified a young man in their children's friend group as a potential suspect.

He has not been charged, however, and a police spokesperson told  the Journal that the investigation is ongoing.

Darlene Rhodes of Bayonne, one of the burglary victims, said that the thief sneaked into her house through her 16-year-old son's bedroom window.  He stole an X-Box, several video games, a pair of sneakers, and packages of T-shirts and socks -- and didn't leave before fixing himself a plate of sausages and peppers from the fridge, Rhodes told the Journal.

When Rhodes returned home after the robbery, she found the empty plate in her son's room. She could even tell that the thief had heated up his snack; the microwave was beeping because he had taken it out before the timer finished.

In the other three reported cases, the thief stole a desktop computer, $450 worth of jewelry, and at one of the houses "removed food from the refrigerator and heated it on the stove," said the police report.

Rhodes told the Journal that her son got his X-Box back through a Facebook contact -- who confirmed that he received the game console from the same young man whom the families suspect.
