Republicans in the state Senate have filed a bill to move primary day to late August, highlighting a lingering disagreement with legislative Democrats.
New York's current September primary date for state offices is too late to comply with a federal law that requires primaries to be held 45 days before the general election to accommodate military and overseas ballots.
A bill filed Friday by Republican Sen. Thomas O'Mara would move primaries for federal and state office in New York to the third Tuesday in August.
Democrats in charge of the Assembly have already passed a bill in that house that would move state primaries to the fourth Tuesday in June, the same date as federal primaries.
