    NBC 4 New York

A New Jersey state police detective shot at a man after he allegedly drove toward him in a vehicle in Paterson Thursday night.

It's unclear what led to the confrontation but witnesses said the man drove at the detective in a shopping center parking lot at Chamberlain Avenue and Broadway at about 8:30 p.m.

That's when the detective fired shots at the gunman.

The detective was hit by the vehicle, but it wasn't known how hard he was hit.

The suspect was taken to St. Joseph Hospital. His condition wasn't immediately clear.

    Police are still investigating.
