Nassau Police Nix Half of Precinct Merger Plan

The Nassau County Police Department has nixed half of the precinct consolidation plan it announced two years ago.

The agency tells Newsday it has dropped plans to merge the First Precinct in Baldwin and the Seventh Precinct in Seaford.

The decision comes after County Executive Edward Mangano and the county Legislature announced they were reversing the merger of the Fifth Precinct in Elmont into the fourth in Hewlett.

The controversial merger plan was approved by the GOP-controlled county Legislature in 2012 as a way to save money. Eight precincts were to be consolidated into four. The closed precincts were to be converted into lighter-staffed community policing centers.

Newsday says Mangano's office didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.
