All of New York City's beaches are officially open for the summer season.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced Friday that all 14 miles of the city's beaches in Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island and the Bronx are open despite severe damage by Sandy.
Bloomberg and Parks Commissioner Veronica White said the city has spent more than $270 million to restore the beaches. They said $386 million is budgeted for future work to restore damaged boardwalks and increase shoreline protection.
New York City beaches include Coney Island, Brighton and Manhattan Beaches in Brooklyn; Rockaway Beach in Queens; Orchard Beach in the Bronx; and Midland, Wolfe's Pond, Cedar Grove and South Beaches in Staten Island.
Officials said more than 40,000 cubic yards of debris were removed from city beaches during the recovery effort.
