Thousands of people in the tri-state were without power Tuesday night into Wednesday morning after high winds knocked down power lines, utility companies said.
Outages were reported in New Jersey, Westchester, Connecticut, New York City and on Long Island amid the blistering cold. Gusts of up to 50 mph made it feel like it was below zero degrees in some areas, while other areas saw single-digit wind chills.
More than 2,600 homes or businesses were without power in Westchester, and around 1,600 more homes or businesses were without power in Putnam County, NYSEG said.
The lights went out for more than 800 customers on Long Island, according to PSEG. Half of them were in Oyster Bay.
JCP&L said more than 100 households were without power in northern New Jersey. PSEG said more than a dozen of its customers were also without power there, including two homes in Elizabeth.
Two more homes in Brooklyn and nine other homes or businesses in Yonkers were without power as well, Con Edison said.
Outages were also reported in Connecticut, where more than 100 customers were without power.

The winds also toppled a tree onto a house in Howell Township, New Jersey, but no one was home at the time, according to police.
