Man Admits Role in Girlfriend's Suicide Leap

Christopher Shears and Alfa Choice jumped last July 12 from the Tappan Zee Bridge

A man who jumped with his girlfriend from the Tappan Zee Bridge — and survived — has pleaded guilty for aiding in her suicide.

The Westchester County district attorney's office says Christopher Shears will be getting mental health treatment rather than jail time.

Shears and Alfa Choice, both of Ithaca, jumped last July 12 after stopping their car on the Hudson River span.

The 29-year-old Choice, a former teacher at the Bronx High School of Science, died from her injuries. Shears was critically injured.

The district attorney's office says the 45-year-old Shears pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter under a provision for intending to aid a suicide. A spokeswoman says Shears is to be sentenced Sept. 24 to probation.

She says he is undergoing mental health counseling.
