NYPD Rescues Couple Stranded on Water Scooter for 9 Hours in Jamaica Bay

A man and woman were rescued by police after being stranded for nine hours on a water scooter in Jamaica Bay.

Officers George Delegianis and Andy Novellano say the 26-year-old man and woman were sharing a watercraft launched from Rockaway at about 9:30 p.m. Monday. They were rescued at 6:30 a.m. Tuesday.

They say the duo was found sitting on the slowly sinking vehicle among razor sharp reeds in a foot of water. They were spotted in Big Egg Marsh, which is part of the federal preserve.

The veteran harbor officers say their boat, FDNY boats and NYPD helicopters had searched for hours along miles of shoreline and marshy area.

The couple was taken to a hospital with hypothermia.
