The ASPCA has opened an emergency boarding facility for New York City pets displaced by Sandy. The shelter is being funded with $500,000 donated by celebrity chef Rachael Ray.
ASPCA spokeswoman Emily Schneider says the 20,000-square-foot shelter is for animals whose owners are unable to care for them while rebuilding their lives.
The shelter opened Saturday in an unused warehouse in Brooklyn's Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood.
The ASPCA is running the facility with city and federal officials.
Almost 80 pets are still in evacuation centers with their owners. The owners will be asked whether they would like the new shelter to take their animals. It'll be open for 30 days.
Pet owners can bring animals to the shelter or call a hotline at 347-573-1561 and their pets will be picked up.
