Police on Long Island say a man has been arrested for allegedly bashing a 33-year-old woman in the face with a rock, knocking her teeth loose, and assaulting her in an elevator.

The 26-year-old man is accused of following the woman into the elevator at the building on Fulton Avenue in Hempstead one Saturday last April.

He struck her with the rock and began to grab her.

She was able to get away when the elevator doors opened, and he tried to take her bag, but fled without it.

The woman had cuts on her head and lip, and several teeth were knocked loose.

Nassau County police say the suspect was found at Rikers Island on Friday and taken to Long Island to be charged for the elevator assault.
