Baby in L.I. DWI Crash Dies; Dad Faces New Charges

Jose Escobar of Westbury is due in Suffolk County Court in Riverhead on Wednesday

A Long Island man is facing upgraded charges after his infant daughter died of her injuries in an alleged DWI crash last month.

Jose Escobar of Westbury is due in Suffolk County Court in Riverhead on Wednesday. Prosecutors say he will be arraigned on a grand jury indictment in the July 19 crash.

The name of his attorney was not immediately known.

Police say Escobar was intoxicated when his car went airborne on the Long Island Expressway service road in Brentwood. The car then crashed into the side of a 7-11 store.

A spokesman for the district attorney says Escobar's 10-month-old daughter, Helen, died of her injuries late last week.

Escobar and his pregnant girlfriend also were injured.

Authorities did not immediately provide an update on the woman's condition.
