Bronx Teacher Accused of Choking Student During Argument at School

A 39-year-old Bronx teacher has been charged for allegedly grabbing a student around the neck during an argument at school earlier this week, authorities say.

William Gomez, a teacher at the Soundview Academy on Bolton Avenue, was arrested Friday in connection with Tuesday's confrontation at school.

Authorities allege he started arguing with a student and the altercation escalated.

Gomez, a nine-year teacher in city schools who has taught at Soundview Academy since 2011, has reassigned the day of the alleged choking, authorities said.

"This individual was immediately reassigned away from the classroom in response to these deeply troubling allegations," Department of Education spokeswoman Devora Kaye said in a statement. "He will not be in contact with students.”

Gomez was expected to be arraigned later Saturday. Attorney information for him wasn't immediately available.
