Bronx Teaching Assistant Accused of Sexually Assaulting Boy: Police

A 29-year-old teaching assistant was arrested Saturday after police say she had sexual conduct with a 14-year-old boy.

Maria Contreras, a Bronx resident, was charged with six counts of second-degree rape with a victim under 15 and two counts of second-degree criminal sex act with a victim under 15, police said.

Contreras was a substitute paraprofessional at the Bronx Academy of Letters, a public middle and high school. Paraprofessionals are typically teaching assistants.

Devora Kaye, a Department of Education spokesperson, said Contreras has been fired.

"These allegations are incredibly disturbing," she said. "We are working with NYPD on their investigation."
