Construction Halted on Atlantic Yards Complex

A contractor has halted construction on the Atlantic Yards complex in Brooklyn, the New York Times reports.

Skanska stopped work at the site, near the Barclays Center, on Tuesday and closed down its prefabrication hub at the Brooklyn Navy Yard on Wednesday, according to the Times.

The newspaper says the Swedish construction firm and construction manager cited design flaws and tens of millions of dollars in extra costs in its decision.

The company had a $117 million contract to supply 930 modules for the 32-story tower. It's the first of 14 planned prefabricated structures in the recently renamed Pacific Park development.

Project developer Forest City Ratner told the newspaper it is confident the buildings will be built and that the Skanska dispute is strictly over money.
